A Gent’s Guide to Bonfire Night: What to Wear (and What to Smell Like)

Bonfire Night falls on Thursday 5th November this year, with plenty of displays happening over the weekends either side. It’s one of my favourite nights of the year – the cold air, the smell of woodsmoke, a hot drink in a paper cup. Here’s how to do it properly.

Layer up

Standing still in a field for two hours is much colder than you think. Start with a thermal or merino base layer, add a chunky knit or fleece, and finish with a warm coat – something down-filled or a heavy wool overcoat if you want to look a bit smarter. A gilet under your coat is a sneaky way to add warmth without bulk.

Sort your extremities

Hat, gloves, scarf. Non-negotiable. A ribbed beanie is the obvious choice, and gloves that work with your phone screen mean you can film the big finale without losing feeling in your fingers. Wool socks and proper boots are a must too – most displays end up in muddy fields, so leave the white trainers at home.

Think about fabric

One thing people forget: sparks and synthetic fabrics don’t mix well. Wool and heavy cotton are much more forgiving if you end up near a bonfire or holding a sparkler. Save the shiny technical puffer for a different night.

The fun bit: smoky fragrances

You’re going to come home smelling of woodsmoke whatever you do, so you might as well lean into it. Smoky, warm fragrances feel completely at home on a cold November night:

  • Maison Margiela Replica By the Fireplace – the obvious one. Roasted chestnuts, a bit of spice and soft vanilla. It’s basically Bonfire Night in a bottle.
  • Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille – rich, sweet tobacco and spice. Pricey and powerful, so one spray is plenty.
  • Anything with birch, cade or incense – look for these notes if you want something drier and smokier on a budget.

Spray it on your scarf rather than your skin – wool holds scent for ages and you’ll get little wafts of it every time you move.

Stay safe

Organised displays are the safest (and usually the best) way to enjoy fireworks. If you’ve got pets at home, keep them inside and give them somewhere quiet to hide. Then grab a hot chocolate, look up and enjoy the show.
