Vert Fougere by Floris

Vert Fougere is the follow up to the excellent Neroli Voyage, and the first fragrance for Floris in-house perfumer Nicola Pozzani, who was tasked to reimagine the fouguere fragrance style. I was intrigued to dive in.

Opening with a sharp grapefruit and sparkling bergamot note, and combined with a rich and earthy galbanum note, it certainly makes a statement of intent. Vert Fougere is quite striking in the opening moments of spraying, a symphony of green, it’s astringent and almost medicinal, offering an ultra-fresh mint-like quality. This is certainly an exciting take on a fougere fragrance.

As the fragrance dries down, the mid notes reveal themselves. Neroli continues the sharp and sparkling theme, maintaining a freshness to what could be considered a green and dark scent. English and French lavender in contrast add and smooth and delicate nuance, a familiar addition to the fougere style. Whilst ginger adds a touch of spice and intrigue.

A classic bottle design for a modern scent.

As the scent dries down further, the sharp qualities of the scent subside. In its place is a smooth and creamy combination of cashmere and cedarwood, mingling beautifully with the lavender in the mid. Amber and patchouli add a dense richness to the woody base. A smokey accord completes the note lineup. The smokey nature of the scent revealed itself earlier in the wearing, but establishes its presence in the base, dark and smouldering.

In terms of performance, I had projection of 2-3 hours and longevity of 8-10 hours on my skin. Vert Fougere gives a nod to the powerhouse fragrances of the 1980s and performs accordingly. Whilst Vert Fougere certainly leans more masculine to my nose, I would consider it a unisex scent and more suited to the cooler months of the year.

The finer details of Vert Fougere.

Vert Fougere is a fragrance that takes a glance at the past but is looking into the future. A scent that blends contrasting qualities yet performs the impressive feat of maintaining the perfect balance between them throughout. Floris are certainly on a roll with my nose, and I’m excited to see where the nose of Nicola Pozzani takes us next.
