K is the latest masculine fragrance release from Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabanna. It’s following previous popular releases, such as The One, Light Blue and the Pour Homme line, K certainly has a lot to live up to. K has handsome bottle styling with sharp lines, whilst the kitsch crown cap may raise eyebrows. The crown and name K allude to the scent being called King but never says as much. The presentation certainly won’t be for everyone, but does the scent split opinion?
In the opening you’re welcomed by a blast of sharp and zesty citrus notes, prominent of which is a beautiful Sicilian Lemon note, it’s crisp and refreshing. Interestingly K then quickly gives a glance of what’s to come as the woody base shines through. Blood orange adds a touch of depth and richness, however, the star of the show to my nose, is the addition of juniper berries. Blending sweetness and tartness, juniper is a personal favourite of mine and welcome addition.
As the scent dries down you’re greeted by a warm and herbaceous combination of clary sage and geranium, green, earthy and floral. Lavender does what it does best, offers a smooth element that pulls all the notes together. However, there’s a surprise, in the form of a pimento note, which adds spice, intrigue and a masculine edge to the scent.
Once the scent reaches the base, you once again meet up with the woody notes that moonlighted in the opening. The cedar note is crisp yet demure, as it sits amongst the notes of vetiver and patchouli. The base is earthy and spicey, enveloped by the cedar and joined by the ever-present juniper note that binds it all together.
In terms of performance, I had projection of 2-3 hours and longevity of 8-10 hours. A great choice for the workday, with enough staying power to lead you into the evening. K is certainly a masculine scent to my nose and one that could be worn year-round.
So many designer scents are released each year, many of which miss the mark with the fragrance fanatic. Now whilst K ticks all the boxes as a crowd-pleaser, there’s substance beneath the crown. K by Dolce & Gabanna is a fragrance that is both fresh and invigorating, yet offers depth and intrigue with the addition of juniper and pimento. Whilst the bottle design may put some off, it shouldn’t, let your nose be the judge.
