We all know and love Aventus, some of us too much, and others begrudgingly. It’s the behemoth of niche fragrances that shows no sign of being toppled from as the peoples favourite.
The performance of Aventus is incredible on my skin, which is a blessing and a curse. Sometimes we want a fragrance to project and get noticed. Other times, and actually more commonly for myself, I enjoy a fragrance that doesn’t seek attention so much. Enter Aventus Cologne…
The bottle design echoes where Aventus Cologne sits in the Aventus lineup. The grey of Aventus Cologne drops in perfectly between the black of Aventus and the white of Aventus for Her. It’s a small touch, but one that’s not gone unnoticed by myself.

Aventus Cologne opens with a bright and sparkling mandarin note, it’s refreshing and an instant reminder that you’re dealing with a very different take on the original. Pink peppercorn and ginger add a touch of sweet spice to an invigorating opening. Despite the change in note lineup from the original, there’s no mistaking the Aventus DNA.
Patchouli is the only surviving mid note from the original, combined with sandalwood and vetiver. Whilst the patchouli and sandalwood add warmth and depth to the mid, it remains fresh and airy thanks to a crisp and green vetiver note. However, a mid note from the original does make a guest appearance in the base of Aventus Cologne. The note of birch is distinctive and perhaps what so strongly links Aventus Cologne to the original.
The bold and beautiful vanilla note is not to be found from the original. The note that to my nose made the original the performer it still remains today. In its absence is a combination of styrax, birch, musk and tonka bean. A resinous quality from the styrax, the dry and almost burnt wood note from the birch combines with a smooth musk and a creamy tonka bean to take this fragrance through the remainder of its life.

In terms of performance, I got projection of 2-3 hours from my skin, with perceived longevity of 6-8 hours. I make a point of saying perceived longevity, as I discovered Aventus Cologne performs the same sleight of hand as its older brother. On several occasions, I received compliments on the fragrance, long after I could personally identify it on my skin, olfactory fatigue in all its glory.
Whilst not listed in the note lineup, there’s a distinct minty freshness from the scent, which took an aquatic turn at times to my nose. Whilst not having the depth for the winter months, Aventus Cologne would be a great choice whenever the suns shining. Aventus Cologne hits the mark by delivering exactly what I expected from the name. As versatile as the original is, the room filling performance did limit it’s appropriateness for many occasions. Aventus Cologne is a lighter, fresher, more approachable and perfectly unisex take on the original.
